I remember going to visit the original cabin that my ancestors lived in when they moved to Tennessee, four generations ago. Ten people lived together in a one-room cabin with a dirt floor. They had no insulation, no electricity, no running water and no bathroom. Their health care was a book of planta- tion remedies. We took the wooden fireplace mantel from that cabin and gave it to a relative who is an architect. He has installed the mantel over his fireplace in a beautiful home with large glass windows sitting on a mountain overlooking Nashville. The house has many rooms, with insulation, with 47
